Cleaning for Oxygen Service (Degreasing)
Due to the explosion risks, the degreasing for oxygen service is a critical step. Prior the release of equipment for gas service in plants, Passive-Action procedures and degreasers are approved by the major players in the gas industry. The parts are inspected and then packaged according to each customer specifications.
Degreasing is an essential step to remove contaminants present on the surface of a part. If this step is overlooked, pickling, passivation and electropolishing will be useless. Indeed, the interaction required between the acid and the stainless steel surfaces will be limited because of the barrier created by the contaminants left on the surface.
A stainless steel pickling treatment is necessary, when the appearance and durability of your products are at the heart of your concerns. Stainless steel pickling is performed with our own acid solutions thus bringing our expertise to meet your expectations. Each part is inspected and the appropriate treatment is selected and then applied.
When welding stainless steel parts is created, that oxidation breaks the chromium oxide film naturally present on the stainless steel surface. This condition is conducive to the formation of corrosion. Moreover, all contaminants are removed from the part surface during pickling.
We can decontaminate mainly small parts in immersion, and large size parts in pulverization. For piping skids and exchangers, treatment may be in circulation or in immersion, as appropriate. We provide reports showing the results of quality tests according to the latest version of ASTM A967 and A380, on request.
Passivation is a surface finishing technique that creates a passive film, where the thickness gradually increases overtime to up to 2.5 nm. The time period varies from a few to 24 hours, due to exposure to air or other oxygen environments. The chromium oxide film is formed spontaneously with an acid solution that removes the contamination and renders the surface passive. This method significantly improves the corrosion resistance.
Electropolishing is a surface finishing technique from which metal is electrolytically removed, ion by ion, from the surface of a metal object, and increases the chromium carbon ratio. The main objective is to minimize microroughness, and reduce the risk of dirt or other product residues. Electropolishing is also used for deburring parts.
Stainless Steel Derouging
Oxidation, better known by its English name “rouging” is a form of corrosion of stainless steel. It occurs mainly in water for injection systems (WFI). These networks are critical to the achievement of pharmaceutical processes. The oxidation is typically composed of ferritic oxides, aluminum, calcium, manganese and other impurities.
Several reasons may explain the presence of oxidation:
- Heat-affected zone of welds not pickled and passivated
- Different stainless steel grades in water for injection network
- Network operating temperature
Oxidation can be defined in three different levels:
- Light oxidation, yellow to pale orange, easy to remove
- Medium oxidation, red to dark brown, more difficult to remove
- Oxydation sévère, de couleur violet foncé à noir, extrêmement difficile à enlever

To meet the growing demand of its customers, Passive-Action now offers mechanical polishing, as a complementary service to chemical surface treatment.
Mechanical polishing is often required when a surface is too rough or the surface does not meet the requirements of the customer or an inspection agency such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
If the surface does not present an acceptable finish, Passive-Action can perform polishing with or without a polishing compound, depending on your requirements. Mechanical polishing is also required with electropolishing a mirror surface finish.

Heat Exchanger Cleaning
The performance of heat exchangers is greatly affected by its cleanliness. Fouling by mineral and limestone considerably reduces their efficiency. Deposits can reduce the heat exchange fluids, therefore accentuate losses and even create corrosion on the plates of a heat exchanger. A suitable period for exchangers cleaning is during the annual maintenance to reduce downtime. However, we understand each situation is different, and we will adapt to any requirements.
Cleaning is performed in a closed circuit, with our tested products which dissolves deposits and creates a mechanical action due to the turbulence during the circulation of our product. The energy gain is significant. This is explained by the reduction of the heat exchanger’s operating temperature after removal of fouling that decreased the restrictions.

Zinc plating protects the carbon parts from rust by forming a physical barrier against oxygen. Parts are soaked in different tanks where a zinc layer is deposited using an electrical current.
Parts can be barrel plated or dipped in 48” high x 48” long x 28” wide tanks. We offer trivalent zinc plating and yellow zinc according to ASTM B633 standard Type 2 (yellow) and Type 3 (clear, or blue).
Roughness Average (Ra)
The roughness is a critical measure for certain applications. Passive-Action can help you measure the average roughness with our calibrated roughness meters.
Borescope is an inspection done during a non-destructing testing service. This involves inserting a camera inside a pipe or in a part inaccessible to the naked eye. It gives a high brightness and an excellent color image. In addition to this control, Passive-Action may, on request, provide a certificate of compliance or a visual (photo or film).
Positive Material Identification (PMI)
When doubts occur about the integrity of equipment during a break analysis, the choice of materials used in its fabrication or when damage is found, non-destructive testing is the ideal way to go. Passive-Action uses several types of non-destructive testing for analyzing properties of metals and welds.
The positive material identification (PMI) is the analysis of a metal alloy to establish the composition by evaluating the amount of each of its elements in percentages. Passive-Action mainly uses X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for its portability.

Surface Finishing Consultation
For any equipment, assembly or part, we can evaluate corrosion problems and propose solutions, qualify the average roughness (Ra or RMS) of a surface finish, or determine the alloy of stainless steel. Passive-Action possesses the expertise that you need.
Whether for determining the quality of material used or to sort the non-identified parts and upgrade your inventory, we can validate the stainless steel grade. We use a portable analyzer Niton XL2 XRF for determining the chemical properties of the components and welds. A report can be issued on site, the day of the inspection. This non-destructive service can either be conducted at our facilities or yours.
